Entry-level interviewers are not testing what you have done. They are testing whether you will show up, want to be there, and are easy to work with. Three signals, three answers, fifteen minutes.

Why first interviews feel impossible (and what changes after one)
Nothing in school prepares you for the format. The eye contact, the silence after a question, the small physical choreography of when to sit and when to stand. The feeling is not weakness. It is novelty. You are doing a thing your body has not done before.
The numbers say the audience is enormous. BLS Current Population Survey: 21.1 million Americans aged 16 to 24 were employed in July 2025, and the count rose by 1.2 million between April and July. Most of those jobs started with someone's first interview ever.
NACE 2024 Student Survey: more than two-thirds of graduating seniors completed at least one internship during college, the highest share in six years. The internship interview is often the first professional one a college student sits for.
The real fear is not the questions. It is not knowing what physically happens before, during, and after. The unknowns stack: what to wear, when to arrive, what their lobby looks like, how long the handshake is, whether you sit when they sit or wait to be told.
Here is the part nobody says out loud. The next interview is dramatically easier than the first. Pattern recognition kicks in fast. The format stops being mysterious after one round.

What entry-level interviewers actually score
Three signals, not 25 questions. Hiring managers for retail, fast food, internships, and entry-level office roles already know you have no work experience. That is not the test.
Energy
Do you genuinely want to be here, or is this any-port-in-a-storm? Energy is contagious in a tiny way. The interviewer's shift has been long; a candidate who actually wants the job changes the room.
Reliability
Will you show up on time, in uniform, ready to work? At entry level, attendance is the thing that breaks teams. The interviewer is reading your eye contact, your body, and your past commitments for one question: would I bet a Saturday shift on this person?
Coachability
Can someone tell you how to do something and have you actually do it? Defensive candidates lose this signal. Curious candidates win it.
Cross-industry, the same three score at different intensities:
Starbucks barista interview: 10 to 15 minutes. Energy and the availability gate.
Finance internship: 30 to 45 minutes. Reliability plus coachability plus a quick can-you-do-the-math check.
First office job out of college: 30 to 60 minutes. All three signals, weighted by team and role.
First nonprofit role: similar to office, with mission-fit weighted higher than tenure.

The FRESH framework
FRESH is the answer scaffold for the no-past-experience case. Use it primarily for "tell me about yourself." The same five beats compose into "why this job" (lead with R) and the closing question (lead with H).
F. Fact about your present
One sentence. School, current routine, recent project. No past job needed.
R. Reason for this specific job
One concrete reason. Not "great company." Something only this place has.
E. Effort signal
One reliability marker. Showed up early to school every day. Ran the bake-sale till for two semesters. Never missed a tutoring session. Specifics beat adjectives.
S. Strength
One transferable trait, named through one detail. "I never miss a deadline" beats "I am reliable."
H. Hear-back question
One closing question that proves you listened during the conversation. Save it for when they ask "any questions for us?"
Worked example, 17-year-old applying to a coffee shop:
"I am a senior at Roosevelt High, working on the school newspaper as the layout editor. I would love to work here because I come in three times a week and you all actually remember my drink, which is the kind of place I want to work at. I have not missed a deadline at the paper in two years. I am calm under a rush, my friends say it is annoying. What would my first month look like if I got the job?"
Sixty seconds. Zero past jobs. Five beats.
Worked example, rising college junior applying for a finance internship:
"I am a third-year studying economics at State, with a minor in statistics. I applied here because the credit-research team writes about the actual decisions analysts make, not just outcomes, and that is the side of finance I want to learn. I have run the modeling competition for our club for two semesters and have not missed a deadline yet. I am quick with Excel and I ask questions before I assume. What does the first two weeks of an intern's onboarding look like?"
Why FRESH and not STAR. STAR is past-tense; FRESH is present-tense. STAR needs a story you already lived. FRESH needs what you actually have right now.

What physically happens (logistics demystified)
Walk through the timeline most candidates have never seen before they live it.
Before
The email or text arrives. Reply within 24 hours, even if the reply is just "Confirming Tuesday at 2pm, thank you." Confirms you read it. Saves the recruiter from chasing you.
What to bring. Phone (silent, in pocket). Printed resume (one copy for retail or food service, three for office). A pen. A small notebook for office and internship rounds. A one-line list of two questions you want to ask.
What to wear. One step above what staff on the floor wear. Fast food and retail: clean dark pants, plain collared shirt, closed-toe shoes. Office: business casual. Avoid jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, strong cologne. The standard is "looks intentional."
During
Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Not 30 (you will annoy them), not on the dot (you look like you barely made it).
The first 60 seconds. Handshake (firm, not crushing), one short greeting ("Thanks for the time"), eye contact, sit when offered. That is the entire choreography.
Length expectations. Retail and food, 10 to 15 minutes. Internship and entry-level office, 30 to 45 minutes. Senior entry-level, 30 to 60 minutes.
The closing 90 seconds. They ask "any questions for us?" Always say yes. One question (your H beat from FRESH). Then "thank you for your time, when can I expect to hear back?"
After
Thank-you email within 24 hours if they gave you an email address. Two sentences max. "Thank you for the time. I am even more interested after hearing about [one specific thing]."
Walk-in retail or food service. Skip the email. Be ready to come back if they call.
Follow up after no response. One week for retail and food. Ten days for internship. Two weeks for office. One short note. Not a phone call.
FRESH reads simple on the page. The five beats look obvious until you say them out loud and find out the version of "tell me about yourself" you rehearsed silently for three days does not survive the first sentence under a stranger's eye contact. Voice practice is the only rehearsal that exposes the gap before the real interview does, especially when you have never been in the room before.
Four mistakes that look like rookie mistakes (and one that does not)
Most rookie patterns are taught by the very advice articles candidates read.
Mistake 1. Apologizing for no experience
"I know I do not have much experience, but..." is the verbatim line every job-tip site recommends and every hiring manager has heard a thousand times. It opens with the deficit. Skip it. Lead with FRESH instead.
Mistake 2. Memorizing rigid scripts
Word-for-word memorization sounds robotic by the third sentence. Memorize the five beats, not the wording. Each interviewer hears a slightly different prompt. You need to land the same beats in different orders.
Mistake 3. Reciting transferable-skills lists like a resume bullet
"I am a hard worker, fast learner, team player, and I have great communication skills" is empty. Replace with one strength shown through one detail. "I never miss a deadline" beats "I am reliable."
Mistake 4. Skipping the closing question
When they ask "any questions for us?" the answer is always yes. The H beat in FRESH. Forgetting it signals you do not actually want this job, even when you do.
The mistake that does not look like a rookie mistake, and is
Pre-disclosing schedule conflicts in the first three minutes. "I should mention I have band practice every Tuesday." Save it for the offer-stage logistics conversation. Pre-disclosing makes you smaller before they have decided to hire you.
